Ordering, Quantities & Coverage
What is the difference between a ton and a cubic yard?
A ton measures weight, while a cubic yard measures volume. Depending on the material, a cubic yard may weigh more or less than a ton.
How much does a ton of material weigh?
A ton equals 2,000 pounds. This applies to all materials sold by the ton.
How much does a cubic yard of material weigh?
The weight of a cubic yard varies by material type. For example, soil weighs significantly less per yard than gravel or stone.
How much area does a ton of material cover?
Coverage depends on the material and the thickness applied. Our team can help estimate coverage based on your specific project.
How much area does a cubic yard cover?
Coverage varies by material and depth. A cubic yard spread at 3 inches deep typically covers about 100 square feet.
Do I need to purchase a full ton or full yard?
No, you can purchase as much or as little as you need on most in-stock materials. Materials priced by the ton are prorated by the pound at the same rate, while some palletized products may have minimum quantities due to mixed sizes or packaging.

Minimum purchase amounts vary by material. Our team can explain any minimums based on how the material is stocked or packaged.

Start with the square footage of your area and the desired depth or coverage. Our team is happy to help you calculate quantities before you purchase.

Selecting & Purchasing Stone In Person
What does the process look like when I want to pick out stone in person?
When you visit the yard, you’re welcome to browse our stone offerings at your own pace. Our team is available to answer questions and help explain options, quantities, and pricing.
Can I hand-select individual pieces of natural stone?
Yes. For many palletized natural stone products, we offer open selection areas where you can choose individual pieces based on size, color, or shape.
Do you also offer full pallets that haven’t been picked through?
Yes, we have full pallet sections for customers who prefer untouched pallets. This is a great option for larger projects or when consistency across materials is important.
How is palletized natural stone priced when I pick my own pieces?
Palletized natural stone is priced by weight. Whether you select individual pieces or a full pallet, you only pay for the weight of the material you take.
How does weighing work when I’m purchasing stone by weight?
We use platform scales and a drive-on vehicle scale to ensure accurate pricing. Materials are weighed either on a pallet scale or by weighing your vehicle before and after loading.
Can I load stone directly into my vehicle?
Yes, many customers choose to load directly into their vehicle. We’ll record your empty vehicle weight, allow you to load your selected material, then weigh the loaded vehicle and charge only for the difference.
Why do you weigh the vehicle with the same number of passengers each time?
To ensure accuracy, the vehicle must be weighed with the same number of occupants before and after loading. This prevents customers from paying for extra weight unrelated to the material.
Do you help load materials, or can I load them myself?
For bulk materials, our team can load you, or you’re welcome to load yourself using your own containers. The pricing is the same either way.
Can I bring my own bins, buckets, or containers for bulk materials?
Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own containers. You can shovel exactly what you need, and the material is priced the same regardless of how it’s loaded.
How are bulk materials sold when purchasing in person?
Bulk materials are sold by weight or volume, depending on the product. Whether we load you or you self-load, pricing remains consistent.
